Bike Path Committee pedals forth with Selectmen's OK
It was an easy ride for the Marion Pathways Committee as it earned Selectmen’s support for a proposed bike path on town property Tuesday night.
The three-member committee is bound by state regulations to show proof of local support for the bike path project.
Following an abandoned rail line that starts at the Mattapoisett town line, the path would pass near the Brew Fish Restaurant before entering Washburn Park. The entire route would be located on town-owned land.
Selectmen agreed to send state officials a letter supporting the trail's construction.
“I think it’s a good idea,” said Selectman Steve Cushing. “It’s long awaited and it’s time to do it.”
The path would traverse three separate parcels. Pathways Committee members will also seek support from the Marion Open Space Committee and Selectmen again, who will vote on behalf of the defunct Recreation Committee, which is responsible for the path’s route through Washburn Park.
The decision was 2-0 as Chair Jon Henry abstained from voting because his home abuts the proposed bike trail.
