Robert Duane Marso of Marion died on Saturday, Dec. 20 at home.

Robert “Bob”, son of the late Kathleen and Elbert Marso was born in Hopedale in 1924. He had been married to the late Jane Newell Marso for 54 years; they had three children, Robert (Anne), Marianne McKenna, and Jeff (Christine). They had seven grandchildren Tori (Josh), Matt, Greg, Emily, Caroline, Katie and Janie.

Bob was a graduate of Harvard College with a degree in engineering. He entered World War II in 1943 and was stationed in the Marianas as a bombardier for the “City of Boston” B-29 Superfortress. A 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Force he flew 32 missions over Japan for which he was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.

Upon returning home, Bob was employed at Draper Corporation as a manager and metallurgist while living in Hopedale. He moved to Marion in 1966 and worked at Teledyne Rodney Metals in New Bedford as the chief industrial engineer until his retirement in 1989.

Bob was best known as a valued community member always willing to give a hand. He was active in the Congregational Church in Marion creating the memorial garden, acting as sexton for years and was well known for his garden stand for the church fair. He served on the Marion Planning Board for many years and was on the Old Rochester Regional School Committee where he served as chair. Bob was an avid gardener, loved to travel, cross country ski and sail with friends. His favorite time was spent with his family.

He will be remembered by all who knew him for his steadfastness, his ready laugh, his deep love of his family and his cheerful service to others. He was a provider, a doer and a quiet hero who left the world a better place.
