Meadowatt solar project inches toward approval

Jun 29, 2016

The Rochester Planning Board continued a public hearing with Meadowatt LLC on Tuesday night regarding its proposed solar farm. Representatives from the company provided another update to the board regarding their plan to move forward.

Meadowatt is a large-scale solar farm proposed for 188-190 Marion Road.

Representatives told the board they have decided to go with cedar fencing along the property to screen it and will update their plan to reflect that. Everything else was in order, and the board agreed to keep the public hearing open for one more meeting. At the next meeting on July 12 the board will likely close the public hearing and have a draft of the position they will vote on ready to look at. Voting would be the following meeting.

One resident did speak up at the meeting. He said he feels the project is on the wrong site, in the wrong location and in the wrong town, and he asked the board to consider denying the project on the grounds of it being bad for the health and welfare of the community.

Planning Board Chair Arnie Johnson explained that the board’s job was to evaluate projects based on town bylaws and regulate them the best they can.

“It’s not a popularity contest,” he said. “If it conforms to town regulations, then we can’t deny it just based on us not liking it. We don’t have a legal reason to deny this project.”
