Drama club reinvents Sullivan, stars of yesteryear

In the words of Ed Sullivan, "Welcome to the shew!"

Old Hammondtown School's Drama Club presented their annual performance on Wednesday June 8. This year's performance was "Rock on Together," a play written and directed by Tracy Fiore, and a callback to the days of variety television.

The play featured Ted, played by Preston Quinn, a student who was just elected Class President based on his promise to interact with the community at large. "Why did I have to make campaign promises?" he asked, frustrated, as he tried to decide what to do.

Ted and his friends decide to do a skit at the local senior center, about the history of rock and roll music. They meet up with Ted's grandfather, Grandpa Jimmy, played by Theo Jacobsen. ("You're not as ancient as I thought you were," one friend observed of Grandpa Jimmy.)

Unfortunately, the trial run doesn't go smoothly, when Ted showcases the history of rock and roll at the very beginning....the cavemen. "Why is moving this rock so hard? We should just roll it," one caveman said.

"How old do you think we are?" asked senior home resident Bernice (played by Aubrie Letourneau), over the snores of her husband, Merv (Calder Eaton).

Ted comes up with a new skit, are-imagining of the "Ed Sullivan Show," featuring his friends as acts such as Elvis Presley (Traeh Carrington), George Burns and Gracie Allen (Thomas Janicki and Eloise Casi), Shirley Temple (Lily Hinds) and Annette Funicello, played by Sophia Meninno.

"Funicello? Why does everyone keep talking about Jello?" Merv asked.

The Beatles (Jacobsen, Logan Maher, Aaliyah Ingraham, and Cameron Manchester) closed out the show, and it quickly became clear that the skit was a success.

Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Lennon ended up having to fend off some overzealous fans. Bernice and her friend Josephine (Meredith Cameron), so uninterested in the skit at the beginning, were doing a little reliving of the good old days.

"Paul is dreamy," sighed Josephine.

"Paul is mine!" Bernice objected.

Josephine was having none of that. "BACK OFF Bernice!"

Ted turned to his friends and shrugged. "I guess they aren't that different from us."

The drama students had a great time putting together the musical. "I loved my character, she was so funny," said Meredith Cameron, who played Josephine.

"I love doing the plays," said Molly Dupre, who played Topo Gigio, Sullivan's mouse sidekick. "It can be a little pressure but it's really fun. You get to make friends and do the thing you love most, acting."
