Keeping it old school is what it’s all about for Rob Rooney.

Rooney, who just opened his second barbershop location in what used to be Al’s Yankee Clipper on the corner of Route 6 and Spring Street, wants to bring his traditional ways to the tri-town.

“The Norman Rockwell-type feel, that’s what I’m going for,” he said. “The smell of aftershave, men’s magazines, a rustic building…It’s like going back in time with your dad to the barbershop.”

However, younger folks need not worry – modern haircuts are available.

“We still do new haircuts too,” Rooney said. “We do all haircuts but with an old school feel.”

Rooney started cutting hair when he was 13. His school abruptly told students they were no longer allowed to wear hats in school, and he and his friends needed to get haircuts if their heads could no longer be covered.

“I started cutting my own hair and my friends’ hair,” he said. “I could just do it.”

Rooney’s father wanted him to go to college, so he went to Massasoit Community College. After that, he pursued his passion and went to the Massachusetts School of Barbering in Quincy.

When he graduated, Rooney began his career in Rockland, but shortly after opened the original Rooney’s Barbershop location in Carver in 1998.

Building on the success of the first location, Rooney decided to expand to the tri-town after Al’s Yankee Clipper owner Al Hamer closed up shop late last year.

“It’s been great,” he said. “The town has been supportive and it’s just been a great experience so far.”

Though he grew up in Carver, Rooney had never made the trek to Marion before Hamer’s shop became available.

“It’s a beautiful town,” he said. “I went to the General Store the other day and it was just awesome.”

The clients thus far have been mixed, some were already Mattapoisett and Rochester clients of Rooney’s Carver location who are taking advantage of a closer option, while others were regulars of Hamer’s.

“A lot of them are coming in with stories of Al. Crazy stories,” Rooney laughed. “He seems like a pretty cool guy.”

Hamer hasn’t been in to the new shop, but Rooney said he hopes he comes by.

“Al was one of those old school barbers, and that’s what I’m going for,” he said. “I wanted to keep it going.”

The shop is open Tuesday-Friday 8-6 p.m. and Saturday, 7-4 p.m. For now, Rooney is doing all of Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in Marion, half of Saturday in Marion and all day Wednesday in Carver.

When he’s not there, barber Shawn Lynch is in charge.

“I was looking for a traditional barber, and he fit that role,” Rooney said of Lynch.

Eventually, Rooney hopes to split his time at the two shops 50-50.
