Rochester sergeant to interview for police chief position
Selectmen will interview Rochester Police Sergeant Robert Small, who aims to become the town's next police chief, on Monday, March 5.
The interview will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Rochester Town Hall. Members of the public may attend, but will not be allowed to participate in the interview process.
Current Police Chief Paul Magee announced late last year that he will retire in September of 2018. When he retires, he will have served 15 years as the town's chief.
Small is the only candidate that will be interviewed; members of the Board of Selectmen decided late last year that they would search in-house for a police chief firs and would only look outside of the department if no candidates could be found. Small is the only member of the department to apply for the police chief position.
Small has been with Rochester's police department for 20 years; he was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2013. He holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Western New England College and earned a law degree from the Southern New England College School of Law (now UMass Law) in 2009. He passed the bar exam in the same year.
