Join a summer reading program or book group at the Rochester Library

ROCHESTER — The Friends of Plumb Library will hold a Tent Sale on Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Rochester Town Green, 17 Constitution Way, Rochester. There will be books, DVDs, CDs, puzzles fashion accessories and games for sale and a bake sale. Buy a canvas tote bag for $10 and fill it up.
Amos the greyhound will be visiting for a meet and greet from 11 a.m. to noon. There will also be tickets for the Summer Fun Beach Bag drawing on June 21. For more information, call the library at 508-763-8600. Anyone who would like to volunteer should also call the library.

Registration is now open for the 2019 Summer Library Program, "A Universe of Stories". Registration closes July 31 at 11:30 p.m. All youth must register using the Youth Program registration link, and teens ages 14 and older can sign-up in the Adult program. Families with multiple children can register on the same form. To register, go to www.plumblibrary.com and look for the Summer Library Program listing on the main web page.
On Tuesday, June 25 from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., children and families can blast off into outer space with the Toe Jam Puppet Band as it plays original songs from its CD, Toe Jam In Outer Space! The show features a space-y dress-up puppet show and some crazy anti-gravity dancing. Weather permitting, this will be an outdoor show at the Plumb Library Gazebo. Registration is appreciated. The performance is sponsored by the Rochester Cultural Council.
The Council on Aging Book Group will discuss “Following Atticus: Forty-eight High Peaks, One Small Dog, and an Extraordinary Friendship” by Tom Ryan on June 18 at 10:15 a.m. at the Senior Center on Dexter Lane in Rochester. In this inspirational tale filled with adventure, friendship and family, the author relates how he and his little dog named Atticus M. Finch attempted to climb all 48 of New Hampshire's 4,000-foot peaks twice to pay tribute to a friend who died of cancer and raise money for charity.
The Nonfiction Book Group will discuss "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures" by Anne Fadiman on June 20 at 6:30 p.m. A study in the collision between Western medicine and the beliefs of a traditional culture focuses on a hospitalized child of Laotian immigrants, members of the Hmong tribe, whose belief that illness is a spiritual matter came into conflict with doctors' methods.
Cafe Parlez Book Group will discuss “Rooms” by Lauren Oliver on Thursday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. After Richard Walker dies, leaving behind a vast country estate, his estranged family arrives for their inheritance, while long-dead former residents bound to the house observe the family and reminisce about their past lives — until both the human and spirit worlds collide.
