Marion Social Club steak dinner a success

Deep in the woods off Pumping Station Road in Marion, hidden away down a series of roads barely wide enough for two cars is the nondescript home of the Marion Social Club.

On Sunday, September 25, the Social Club's steak dinner drew about 121 participants out to the secluded clubhouse for great food, raffles and a chance to support the people who need help the most.

"We raise this money for scholarships, for the kids, the needy, the elderly," said Joe Ayers, a club's "bakemaster" who helped put out plenty of the day's food.

Wearing a hat comprised primarily of scratch tickets, George Pina, handled the raffling off of house plants, lottery tickets and plenty else.

"The first prize is about $100 in scratch tickets," said Pina. "It [the raffle] is a combination of we spend a few dollars and people bring donations. It's a combination."

The Marion Social Club, going into it's 30th year, is an invitation-only club of local residents trying to give back to the community. Although residency in Marion is not required, the majority are from Marion with a few hailing from Carver, Middleboro and elsewhere.

"Our club doesn't have a social hour," said Pina. "This is our social hour."

The club throws a variety of events a year including chicken-bakes for seniors, clam boils and thanksgiving food drives. And just like their headquarters, sometimes they prefer to help people without fanfare.

"Half the time we don't want people to know," said Pina about the club's initiatives.

Because at the end of the day, giving socially isn't about the glory; it's about community, helping people and hats made of lottery tickets.
