Old Rochester sailing program aims to educate
MATTAPOISETT — There were Bulldogs and Lions in the water at Mattapoisett Town Beach on Tuesday, May 21 as the Old Rochester Regional High School sailing team took down St. John Paul II, 3-0.
The win was the second of the year for the Bulldogs, who will finish up their season on Thursday, May 23 against Sandwich High School.
According to assistant coach Rick Warren, the team features students at a wide range of skill levels, from experienced racers to near beginners.
Warren said this range creates a fun environment for the team as everyone looks to improve their skills.
“We’re good — We have a lot of young kids,” said Warren. “We have a much larger team than most schools.”
Warren said his biggest takeaway from the season will be watching each sailor learn and progress.
High school sailing is a self-officiated event. Warren said that while kids are learning how to sail competitively, they are also learning the rules of the race and the sportsmanship that goes into sailing.
“They are great kids,” said Warren. “They get along. They usually help each other out. It's a good bunch.”
