Two candidates face off in Republican primary for 10th Bristol district representative
When Rep. Bill Straus announced earlier this year he would not run again for the 10th Bristol district, it meant Tri-Town voters in 2024 would elect a new state representative for the first time in more than 30 years.
Three candidates have emerged to run for the seat held by Straus, a Democrat, for 16 terms.
Fairhaven town meeting moderator Mark Sylvia is running unopposed in the Democratic primary.
In the Republican primary, Fairhaven Republican Town Committee chair Robert McConnell and Old Rochester Regional School Committee member Joe Pires will vie for the nomination.
The state primary election is Tuesday, Sept. 3. Polls will be open at the Rochester Senior Center, Old Hammondtown School in Mattapoisett and Benjamin D. Cushing Community Center in Marion from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
