Old Rochester swimmers post strong performances and 'swim hard'
Swimmers from Old Rochester Regional High School dove in head first to face their competition as the Old Rochester boys and girls swim teams butterflied, backstroked and more against Bishop Stang High School.
The swim meet was held Friday, Jan. 10 at UMass Dartmouth where the boys teams from both schools swam against each other and the girls teams did the same. The Bulldogs boys won their meet by a score of 107 to 58 and the Lady Bulldogs lost 65 to 78.
Head coach for both Old Rochester teams Sarah Robinson said both teams "swam really hard."
Despite the loss, Robinson explained the girls team "rallied and stepped up" while having a number of swimmers sick for this meet.
"Bree LeFavor won the girls 100 meter backstroke and it was a tight race between her and the Bishop Stang swimmer," said Robinson.
She said the boys team had a number of swimmers participate in their championship meets last year and they are looking to send more swimmers to compete against the state's best this year.
"Sam Rayner made the state cut in the 100 meter free style and he made the state cut in the 50 meter freestyle at the last meet," said Robinson.
In order for an individual swimmer to compete at the state or sectional level, they must meet a certain qualifing time known as the "state cut" or "sectional cut."
This was only the second meet of the year for both teams and the boys are undefeated so far with 2 wins and 0 losses while the girls continue to swim hard despite the 0 win and 2 loss record.
"The goal for the year for the boys is to make states again and to have more individuals make state cuts in a variety of events," said Robinson. "The goal for the girls is to try and make a sectional cut and continue to swim hard."
