Musicians play a few of their 'favorite things'

When violinist Emily Richard performs, she aims to bring her audience to tears.
A former Sippican School student and freshman at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., Richard was one of the dozen acts to perform in “My Favorite Things,” a concert at Tabor Academy hosted by the Tri-County Music Association.
The second annual concert welcomed back past recipients of the association’s scholarship program to perform a musical selection of his or her own choice. On Friday night, Richard performed “Ave Maria.”
“This is something everyone can relate to and it’s something that will get the audience in tears,” Richard said. “It gets people crying every time I play it.”
Cal Heavey, a Tabor grad and current freshman at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, chose to showcase his singing talent with a cover of the jazzy tune “Angel Eyes” by Matt Dennis.
Heavey said he chose the song because it is one he will be tested on at his university.
“It’s like a test now,” Heavey said. “I’m learning it for school but I’m a rock kid. I love the classics like Aerosmith, Guns N’ Roses, and Lady Gaga is my guilty pleasure.”
Heavey also took part in last year’s show, during which he sang a few numbers from musical theater. With performances ranging from jazz to classical and even original compositions, Heavey said the annual event always promises a good time.
Of the concert, Heavey said, “The music blends really well and the musicians make it a complete show.”
Additional performances include Scituate resident Andrew Fiddler’s saxophone cover of Charlie Parker’s “My Little Suede Shoes,” Berkley College of Music student Ben Burn’s original composition on the acoustic guitar, and Koby Williamson’s guitar solos of songs by German composer Hans Werner Henze.
Sean Packard of Marion, Mike and Travis Bliss, and Matt Pereira of Mattapoisett also performed.
