Marion EMS rescue dog trapped in ice
MARION — A black labrador fell through ice at Washburn Park early Thursday, March 12.
The Marion Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services rescued the dog, which had wandered across the marsh and pond near Point Road.
Marion Fire Chief Brian Jackvony said the department sent two responders in ice rescue survival suits, and the dog was rescued without sustaining any injuries.
“(The dog) seemed to be healthy and didn't seem to be in a lot of distress, but was unable to get back onto the ice and make it to shore,” Jackvony said.
The dog was trapped for about 30 minutes before the team leashed the dog and brought it back to shore.
Rescuers checked the dog with the animal control officer over the phone once they were back on land, and reported the animal it seemed to be fine.
Jackvony said the fire department had just completed ice safety training last week.
“We were prepared and we always carry [ice rescue] equipment and have it immediately available in the winter months to be able to get out there quickly and respond,” Jackvony said.
Jackvony said residents should use caution around all ice. Saltwater and freshwater ice can melt differently, especially as the weather warms up.
He said if people decide to go out on ice, they should always have a chaperone on shore to contact emergency services.
“Just always use caution, always consider ice to be unsafe,” Jackvony said.
