To the editor: To the Residents of the Old Colony Regional Vocational High School District
Six years ago, Old Colony began a journey that now leads to a second district-wide vote on June 20, 2026. Throughout this process, students, staff, and community members helped envision a future that would expand opportunities for students and strengthen vocational education across our region. While there have been successes, there have also been challenges, including misinformation, division, and the failure of the first vote.
The Old Colony District School Committee had the authority to call for a second vote and did so after careful consideration. This decision was not made to disregard the original outcome, but because approximately 87 percent of eligible voters either did not participate or were unaware of the election. We respect those who voted and those who hold differing views, but we believe the future of Old Colony is too important to leave unresolved.
Old Colony has served generations of students well, but the building remains largely unchanged since its construction. While it has been carefully maintained, many critical infrastructure concerns are not visible to the eye. At the same time, nearly half of all applicants are denied admission due to limited space. These students represent the future workforce our communities and employers increasingly need.
The School Committee takes seriously its responsibility to both taxpayers and students. We believe this project represents an investment in future generations and in the continued strength of vocational and technical education. Public education has always depended on communities willing to invest in opportunities that extend beyond the present day.
We encourage you to learn more about the project by visiting the Old Colony website and to make your voice heard on June 20. The students who will benefit from this decision are not only future Old Colony students—they are your children, grandchildren, neighbors, and future community leaders.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
