Meet Marion's new harbormaster Cameron Wentworth
MARION — Growing up spending most family time on a boat, Cameron Wentworth knew he wanted to make a living working on the water.
Working for the Plymouth Harbormaster Department for two summers as part of his graduation requirements for Massachusetts Maritime Academy “sealed the deal” that he was meant to work in environmental law enforcement.
Wentworth spent six more years there as an assistant harbormaster after graduating, and said as much as he loved his time there he wanted to further his career, learn more and take on more responsibility.
The Carver resident is now Marion’s newest harbormaster, filling a role that had been vacant since March. While he’s busy with the beginning of summer boating and catching up work the vacancy left, he said he’s excited to serve the town and build relationships.
“I hope to be an approachable harbormaster,” he said. “I can be in an enforcement role when needed, and I can be an approachable person when needed too.”
Being the harbormaster, Wentworth said, requires him to wear many hats. From painting boats to leading search-and-rescue operations, he said there are a million different aspects to keeping the harbor clean, safe and enjoyable.
That’s one of his favorite parts about the job.
“What really drew me to harbormaster work is how many different things you get to do throughout the day,” Wentworth said. In his time at Plymouth, “there was never a day that I didn't go in that I wasn't excited, because I didn't know what was going to happen that day.”
With so many things to do each day, he said the hours can be long. There’s much to learn about local waterways, projects to complete and people to help.
Despite the time demands, he’s excited for the new role and loves the work he gets to do.
“The group in the harbor as a whole is great — all of the different industries here — so it's fun to be here,” he said. “I don't feel like it's draining or taxing on me or anything like that.”
