Marion and Mattapoisett to receive federal transportation funding

Marion and Mattapoisett will receive about $19.5 million in federal transportation funding for a bicycle and walking path and construction work on Interstate 195.

Governor Maura Healey announced Sept. 24 that the state had secured $153 million in additional federal funding for transportation projects on roads, bridges, walking and biking infrastructure and MBTA work. Some of this money will be going to Tri-Town transportation projects.

The funding comes from the Federal Highway Administration’s annual redistribution process, which  redistributes funding that other states and federal programs are unable to use before the end of the federal fiscal year.

Marion will receive $4.74 million for phase one of the shared-use path, or a walking and bicycle path, from the Marion-Mattapoisett town line to Point Road. The path will also be part of a larger network connecting Mattapoisett to Wareham, and on a larger scale, to the SouthCoast Bikeway.

Mattapoisett, Marion and Wareham will receive $14.71 million for resurfacing work on I-195. The project resurfaces and preserves pavement along the interstate throughout the city and towns.
