Marion residents celebrate a branch of history

MARION — A group of tree lovers said goodbye to a 200-year-old red oak tree in town on Thursday, Oct. 22.
Rot has been found on the centuries-old plant, and the tree warden and Select Board agreed to soon cut it down.
The dozen or so attendees at the celebration included several members of the Parks and Trees Committee. The group spent time reflecting on what the tree may have witnessed in its long life, and people shared poems and thoughts about the importance of trees.
Richard Lewis played his guitar tune "If I Could Only Be A Tree," after which the group enjoyed a chili dinner across the street.
