Brush fire breaks out in Mattapoisett
MATTAPOISETT — What started as a small controlled burn on a Mattapoisett resident’s property got out of hand around noon Saturday.
The resident held a permit to burn brush, but the fire spread beyond the intended materials and brought the Mattapoisett Fire Department to the scene April 11.
Chief Andrew Murray said the risk of similar fires is heightened during open burn season, which ends May 1.
“This is probably right around the time where stuff's picking up,” he said. “Any nice day that there is, people are trying to get as much as they can burn because they've only got a few weeks left.”
He said the best way to stay safe when burning brush is to have a readily available water source, and test it to make sure it is functioning. He also recommended carrying a phone to contact the fire department in case of emergency and to keep combustibles away from the fire.
Murray also said it is important to keep hand tools — such as a rake or shovel — readily available to put out unintentional fires.
