Assistant Superintendent Sharlene Fedorowicz presented MCAS results to the Mattapoisett School Committee at its meeting Nov. 3.MATTAPOISETT — MCAS results for Center School and Old Hammondtown School averaged well above the state in math, English Language Arts and science.
Assistant Superintendent Sharlene Fedorowicz presented the results breakdown to the Mattapoisett School Committee at its meeting Tuesday, Nov. 3.
District English achievement was 49%, exceeding the state by 16 percentage points.
Math achievement reached 47%, exceeding the state by 13 percentage points. Participation in subjects was strong at 98-99% across subjects at both schools.
“We’re really leading the way with MCAS scores. We’ve got great resources for teachers. Kids are motivated,” Fedorowicz said.
School principals Amanda Chamberlin and Charles West shared action steps for improvement for English and math.
English scores demonstrated a need for deeper writing instruction. The schools will tackle writing by building on sentence structure, putting more writing work into the curriculum and teaching grammar in the context of writing rather than in isolation.
Action steps for math include professional development for teachers in grade-level teams that focus on best math instruction practices. Math interventionists will also continue to integrate problem-solving strategies into math lessons and provide targeted instruction in small groups.
Science at Old Hammondtown reached 64%, 27 percentage points above the state average. Chamberlin said she was proud to present science results, which had 80% of students meeting or exceeding expectations. This ranks Mattapoisett in the top five state districts for science scores.
