Ruth Elizabeth “Dolly” (Morgan) Johnson, 92
Ruth Elizabeth “Dolly” (Morgan) Johnson, 92, of Marion, MA passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the Sippican Health Center in Marion, MA. Born in Calais, ME daughter of the late Ruth E. (Stebbens) and Melvin F. Morgan. She made her home in Marion for more than six decades, raising her family there with her husband, David, and building a life centered around family, home, community and the ocean she loved.
Ruth grew up near the water, with some of her happiest childhood memories spent at the lake. Years later, Ruth and David settled with their family in Marion in 1962, where the ocean was just minutes away. Silvershell Beach became a favorite place and part of the rhythm of family life, and her love of being near the water remained with her throughout her life.
Ruth and David were married for 55 years and together raised four children. Their family eventually grew to include 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and family remained at the center of Ruth’s life. Over the years, Ruth and David especially enjoyed traveling to visit family, including trips to Minnesota. One particularly exciting chapter took them to hockey arenas in different cities as they followed their son-in-law’s NHL career—an experience they loved and remembered as one of the great adventures of their lives.
Ruth was a familiar presence at Sippican Elementary School, where she worked as a cook for more than 20 years. She also gave her time to children and her community as a Girl Scout leader and Den Mother. At home, her hands were rarely idle. She loved to cook, knit, crochet and do needlepoint, and she enjoyed playing the piano and tennis.
Food was one of the ways Ruth loved people. Her homemade meatballs and sauce, yellow birds, Chinese pork chop suey and blonde brownies became family favorites. When the whole family descended on the Johnson home, it was wonderfully chaotic - people talking over one another, food everywhere and plenty of laughter. Her grandchildren will remember homemade treats, silly games and faces and, most of all, lots of hugs.
Ruth was quick-witted, feisty, intuitive and famously unfiltered, with a stubborn streak that those who loved her knew well. She could read a room remarkably well—even if it sometimes took her a little longer to catch the punchline. A joke might sail past her at first, only to be followed several minutes later by an “Ohhh, I get it!” and a burst of laughter, something that never failed to amuse her husband, David. And if Ruth had a secret to share, she would cup her hands around her mouth like a megaphone, apparently convinced this would somehow ensure that only the intended recipient could hear it. Those little quirks, along with her humor, warmth and unmistakable personality, are among the things her family will miss most.
During her final years, Ruth made her home at Sippican Healthcare Center, where she was surrounded by caregivers who came to know her well and treated her with tremendous kindness. Her family is deeply grateful for the care, patience and affection they showed her.
She was the beloved wife of David P. Johnson who passed away in 2012. Devoted mother of David M. Johnson (Wanda) of Wareham, MA, Evan G. Johnson (Cybil) of New Bedford, MA, Steven P. Johnson (Nannette) of Taunton, and Deborah R. Kleinendorst (Scot, deceased) of Cohasset, MN. Adored grandmother of Amber, Brenda, Patsy, Morgan, David, Brooke, Kyle, Kelby, Big Dyl, Jared and L’il Dyl. Great grandmother of Trinity, Jaxon, Landen, Harper, Michael, Ryleigh, Scot, Clay, Ruthie, Asher, and Colt. Dear sister of the late Charles Morgan (Phyllis), Melvin Morgan, David Morgan (Rachel), Annie Arey (Herb)and Barbara Achorn (Everett). Loving aunt of many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Chapman Funerals & Cremations – WAREHAM, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham on Thursday, September 17 from 3-6PM. Burial will be private.
