Wampanoag exhibit opens Nov. 6 at Mattapoisett Museum
Event Date
MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Museum will unveil its new, permanent exhibit entitled “From the Land to the Shore: The Wampanoag of Mattapoisett” on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.
The exhibit tells the story of the Wampanoag people who have lived in this region for more than 12,000 years. Contributions from historian Linda Coombs, designer Steven Peters and Curator Connor Gaudet will be showcased at the exhibit.
Coombs, an Aquinnah Wampanoag historian, was the consultant and primary author of the text featured throughout the exhibit.
The exhibit follows the story of the Early Contact Period and Colonization through King Philip’s War, and its outcomes on the Wampanoag culture and community as they exist today.
The exhibit weaves in local, Tri-town area related examples of broader historical narratives.
The exhibit also features a restored diorama of a Wampanoag summer village, originally created by Old Rochester Regional High School students in the 1990s.
