MATTAPOISETT — After a state championship, the Old Rochester boys golf team headed to North Carolina for a shot at the national title.
The team placed 37th out of 55 teams also invited to compete in the Boys High School Golf National Invitational at the Pinehurst Resort from July 18 to July 20.
The boys battled 100 degree heat and weather delays through the week.
Five players including Jack Czerkowicz, Luke Pierre, Brady Mills, John Bongiorno and August Herbert played in the tournament.
Head Coach Chris Cabe was proud of his team and their effort.
“They did their job, they went down here, they competed,” Cabe said. “They might be upset about what they were able to do, but just to be able to get here means you're one of the top 55 teams in the country.”
The team did well in the first round of the tournament with Mills and Czerkowicz getting three birdies each.
Cabe said the tournament was good mental practice for the team helping them to understand what it is like to compete at such a high level.
“It's just one of those once-in-a-lifetime memories that these kids will never forget to be able to play on such prestigious courses down here,” Cabe said.
Looking ahead to the next fall and spring season, Cabe hopes the team can continue a winning streak. The team is only graduating one senior, Mills, so most of the team will stay the same.
“If they're able to do their job for next year, we'll hopefully be back here again next year and maybe just do some better damage than what we did this year,” Cabe said.
