Sixth grader wins Mattaposiett Lions Club art contest
MATTAPOISETT — An Old Hammondtown Elementary School sixth grader has won a Mattapoisett Lions Club art contest.
Valentina Hermoso designed a poster for the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest, which was selected for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “Harmony in Humanity.”
Valentina’s poster is among more than 450,000 entries submitted worldwide in the contest. To become the international grand prize winner and win a $5,000 cash prize and trip to a special awards ceremony, her poster must advance through multiple district and international levels of competition.
“Our club is cheering for Valentina as her poster advances in the competition, and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world,” club President Paul Stubbs said.
Locally, the club honored Valentina and several other students for their participation on Monday, October 26th at Old Hammondtown School.
Valentina was awarded a $100 Barnes and Noble Gift Card.
Henry Kanaly won second place and was awarded a $75 Barnes and Noble gift card, Rosie Palomo got third place and a $50 Barnes and Noble gift card and Oliver Costa received fourth place and a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card.
Stubbs said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at Old Hammondtown School.
“It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what compassion means to them,” he said. “I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.”
