Tri-Town weathers temperatures in the 90s over the weekend
Sweltering summer heat swept across Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester over the July 4 weekend with temperatures peaking around 95 degrees alongside high humidity.
Despite the heat, no records were broken across the three towns.
Marion opened a cooling center for residents to rest in at the Benjamin Cushing Center and had multiple misting and cooling fans at the fireworks display.
Marion Fire Chief Brian Jackvony said the fire department and town sent out warnings for residents to be careful in the heat and drink lots of water.
“Seek relief and take care of your neighbors— that's basically the message that we put out,” Jackvony said.
The fire chief said the department only had one heat related emergency on July 3. The person was treated and transported to an area hospital.
There were no specific cooling centers open in Rochester, but Rochester Police Chief Michael Assad said the Council on Aging and police station is always open for people looking to cool down.
Assad said residents should be aware of their pets during heatwaves. He said owners should never leave their pets in the car and be aware of how hot pavement gets before going for a walk.
The police chief also said to invite neighbors over if they do not have air conditioning when temperatures get high.
“We need to make sure that we take care of each other, especially in a small community like Rochester,” Assad said.
