Jane Roderick

Jul 18, 2018

Jane D. “Snookey” Roderick of Marion peacefully entered Glory on July 13 surrounded by prayer, family and friends. She was the daughter of the late Alfred and Priscilla Santos Roderick. Snookey lived in Marion most of her life and was educated in the Marion Public School System. She graduated from Old Rochester Regional High School in 1985.

As a promising student Snookey was awarded the Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship which paid 100 percent of tuition and fees and related living expenses for four years at the Massachusetts college of her choice.

She graduated from Boston College in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in psychology and began her career in social services as residential counselor for teens in Boston and later moved back to Marion and worked as a residential counselor for teens in Wareham. She decided to change careers and became a preschool teacher at the Children’s Depot in Marion before deciding to return to school.

Snookey earned a Master’s of Social Work from Boston College and embarked on her new career as a social worker for The Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. There she was a champion for human rights – making sure that all the people she served were treated with dignity and respect and received the services they were entitled to. She worked for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health for more than 10 years before retiring. Even in retirement she worked to serve others. She successfully advocated for the seniors and handicapped where she resided to make the facility more handicap accessible. She had an even bigger plan for the state of Massachusetts. She loved her job and her coworkers.

Snookey enjoyed, first and foremost, serving and trusting God, being with family and friends, and intelligent conversation. She will be remembered for her faith in God, compassion for mankind, her strength, determination, wit, intelligence and hope for our world.

Snookey is survived by nine siblings, Alfred Roderick, Jr. of Castro Valley, California, Ronald Roderick and Joseph Roderick both of Marion, Matthew Roderick and Priscilla Roderick both of Waterbury, Connecticut, Rita Roderick of New Bedford, Ellen Joseph of Woburn, Anna Norman of Brevard, North Carolina, and John Roderick of Roslindale. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews to whom she served a second mother. Her Aunt Lillian Monteiro, Uncle Morris Santos, her dear cousin Delores “Lolly” Hayes, many cousins, her first and lifelong friend Rhonda Pina Josie, her goddaughter Nikki Josie, and many true friends.

She was predeceased by her brothers, the late Samuel Roderick and Ricardo Roderick, and her sister, the late Genevra “Jenny” Roderick.

Because of Snookey, the world is a better place. She was loved and will be missed by many.

Visiting hours will be Thursday, July 19, at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Route 28), Wareham from 5 to 8 p.m. Her funeral service will be Friday, July 20, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Marion.
