Mattapoisett Historical Commission invites residents to apply for the Historic Plaque Program

MATTAPOISETT —  In honor of the United States of America’s 250th anniversary, the Mattapoisett Historical Commission encourages residents of Mattapoisett to apply for a historic house plaque or to replace existing house plaques in need of updating. 

The Mattapoisett Historical Commission was established in 1973 to identify, evaluate, preserve and protect the historically significant resources of the town. 

The historic plaque program serves to recognize historic structures with the placement of historic plaques. 

The property must meet two or more of the following qualifying criteria. 

The structure must be at least 75 years old. Structures must be associated with a person or persons who have made notable contributions to history. 

The structure embodies the distinctive characteristics of a period of architecture or style and may be associated with a noted architect or builder. 

The site of the structure has an important connection to local history. 

The plaques will display the original owner’s name and spouse, if applicable, and the date. There is space for three lines. It should be attached to the front of the house where it can be visible from the street. Plaques are informational only and do not restrict the owner from making changes to the property. 

The application form is available on the Mattapoisett Historical Commission website. Once complete it should be returned to the Mattapoisett Historical Commission located at 16 Main St.
