Homecoming heats up: Another win for Old Rochester football

MATTAPOISETT — A big win for the Old Rochester Regional High School Bulldogs pushed the varsity football team further into the playoff season and set off a thrilling homecoming weekend for the school.
On Friday, Oct. 17, Old Rochester hosted their annual Homecoming pep rally and football game, where the team won 41-0 against New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School. Old Rochester’s record stands at 2-4, achieving both wins in the league playoffs.
Head Coach Bryce Guilbeaut is happy with the direction the team is heading with more wins. The defense especially had a great night getting multiple interceptions and even scoring on one.
“That obviously was huge. We took advantage of it,” said Guilbeaut.
Having a rough start to the season with multiple losses in a row, Guilbeaut was pleased the team had come together.
“We had a tough schedule to start the year. We had a lot of young guys playing and that takes time to get everybody on the same page,” he said.
Benjimin Baptiste, a sophomore running back enjoyed the game, especially since the fans brought the homecoming energy.
“A lot of us got our first touchdown, a bunch of seniors got our first touchdown — it was fun, it was great,” said Baptiste.
He is proud of his team's performance, and now looks forward to competing in looks the playoffs. “We just have to finish the games. We just have to win,” said Baptiste.
Guilbeaut explained that his team just clicked tonight and said, “hopefully play our best football in October and November.”
Earlier in the day, Old Rochester gathered in the school gym to get pumped for the game. Each class presented a skit themed around the homecoming football game while fall athletes and leaders were celebrated for their hard work.
Rafael Duarte, a junior involved with a skit, loves how everyone gets so into the school spirit homecoming week. He said, “It gets a lot of the class involved in school spirit.”
Duarte and his friends enjoy “school spirit” overall and the “competition of the skits” where they hope to outdo the other classes.
All the skits were based off of movies: The seniors chose “Teen Beach Movie,” the juniors “Rio,” sophomores “Peter Pan,” and freshman “Frozen.”
Senior Class President Caroline Houdelette was satisfied with the hours of work she and her class put into their production. They have been practicing two hours twice a week for two weeks.
“Everyone just really put their all into it for our last one so it was really great to see the finished product today,” she said.
Houdelette likes how the skits build community across the school and bonds the senior class together, especially over four years.
“We started with 50 kids and it's really grown to almost the entire class which I love,” she said.
Principal Mike Devoll loves the passion and spirit the classes bring to skits.
He said, “They've been great. Every year, I keep saying we keep outdoing ourselves.”
Danielle Dory, senior advisor and special education teacher, was impressed with how organized the seniors were this year.
She was pleased at how they have grown and matured since she started advising them freshman year.
“They basically ran this whole thing. We gave a little bit of input, but this is really all them, and they should be super proud of their hard work,” Dory said.
Devoll is impressed each year with more students joining the skits. “It's great to see our freshmen watching our seniors like, oh wow, this is what we can do in the future,” he said.
