UPDATE: Rochester 11-year-old Madelyn Eitas died in avalanche Thursday
ROCHESTER — An 11-year-old girl from Rochester died in an avalanche while on a trip to Utah.
Madelyn Eitas, a student at Rochester Memorial School, was with her family during February break at Brighton Ski Resort when she was trapped in an avalanche Thursday, Feb. 19.
The Unified Police Force of Greater Salt Lake in Utah received a call about a person involved in the avalanche near the resort around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, about half an hour after it began.
Around 20 people, including Madelyn’s family, searched for her while waiting for first responders to arrive.
The Utah police said her brother, Cameron Eitas, located her using an app.
She had been buried for 30 minutes when she was found by search and rescue and transferred to a hospital in critical condition. She died in the hospital later that day.
Due to heavy winds, a dispatched rescue helicopter was forced to turn around.
The resort had been closed Wednesday due to bad weather.
Rochester Police Chief Michael Assad urged the Rochester community to come together during this time in a post on the Rochester Police Facebook.
Michael Nelson the Superintendent of Old Rochester Regional Schools reminded community members that there is ongoing counseling and support services for staff and studnets across the district.
"This is devastating news for our school community. We offer our sincere condolences to the student's family, friends, classmates, and teachers during this unimaginable time," Nelson wrote in a press release from the district. "Our focus at this time is on supporting those who are grieving and we ask that the family's privacy be respected."
Madelyn's death is under ongoing investigation by the U.S. Forest Service and Utah Avalanche Center.
