Marion man charged with kidnapping

A Marion man has been charged with kidnapping after a seven-hour standoff with Wareham Police ended early Thursday morning.

Spencer Mello, 26, was scheduled to be arraigned in Wareham District Court on Dec. 1.

Wareham Police and Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council S.W.A.T. officers responded to 36 Sunset Boulevard in East Wareham at about 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Police said Mello had been invited to the home.

Officials were told that at least one person was being held hostage inside the home.

Upon arrival, officers reported that they were ignored while lights were turned off and doors locked. According to police, four adults and two sleeping children were inside the home during the standoff.

At about 3 a.m., those inside the home came out to speak with officers but would not provide a full account of what happened, police said.

Police arrested Mello soon after.

Jaimee Morris, 27, who is listed as homeless, was arrested two and half hours later on an unrelated warrant when caseworkers from the state’s Department of Children and Families returned to the house to check on the children.

Police noted that Morris is not the mother of the two children who were in the house.

No one was injured during the incident.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and updates will be provided when more information is available.
