Dozens gathered as the Marion police, fire and harbormaster’s departments held a trunk or treat complete with Halloween-themed music, decorations and lots of candy.
Lauren Roberts, Administrative Assistant of the police department explained that it was a team effort putting the event on and that law enforcement pitched the idea to other Marion departments.
“We love to bring the departments together and bring the kids out and for everyone to come and meet the officers and other people in town,” Roberts said.
Marion Public Works Department sent candy through a tube to kids from the top of their cherry picker truck while the fire department and Emergency Medical Service responders showed kids their trucks, letting them sit inside.
Marion Patrolman Nathan Oliveira and Sergeant Sean Day manned the trunks of their patrol cars decked out in festive decorations as they handed out candy.
Both officers said that the best part of the event is building community and getting to meet neighbors.
“It's nice to interact with the kids so they see that we're approachable,” Day said.
Hazel Moore, dressed as Wednesday Addams, and Lexie Dupont, dressed as a magical vampire bat, were in the Halloween spirit during the event. The pair carried buckets full of candy from car to car.
Both girls were excited about "going on the jumpy house” after receiving treats from the police officers. They plan to wear the same costumes when they go trick or treating on Halloween.
Kat Bowser, a parent, wanted to get involved with the community having just moved to the area in July. Her daughters were running from the face painting station to the pumpkin painting area.
“We're happy to be here and this event is really sweet and we'll probably come next year,” she said.
Roberts said she is eager to put the event on again next year since the town was receptive and the turnout is always good.
"It's just nice to see everyone," Roberts said.
