Railcar full of construction waste catches fire in Rochester
Mar 31, 2026
ROCHESTER — Construction scraps headed to a waste disposal facility by train caught fire Saturday afternoon.
The Rochester Fire Department arrived at SEMASS, the region’s waste-to-energy plant, around noon of March 28 to find a railcar behind the Cranberry Highway facility full of smoke.
The rail company delivering the railcar and its contents to SEMASS notice smoke from the car and called 911. First responders contained the fire to the railcar it was in and quickly extinguished it.
The department extended its thanks to off-duty Marion Fire Captain Ronnie Auld, who heard the call and assisted the Rochester Fire Department.
