MATTAPOISETT — Car enthusiasts, antique car owners and Mattapoisett residents gathered at Shipyard Park Sept.4 for one of the last vintage car shows of the summer.
Over 50 cars, mostly from the 20th century, were parked on the lawn with hoods up and windows down. The show was one of the final Friday cruise nights in the summer series, which is held from May to September each summer.
David Despres, a Fairhaven resident, has been coming to the car shows for over six years with his 1967 Volkswagen Beetle. He calls the car Jerry, and Jerry is one of the last of its kind to have a rounded bumper style before the model switched to squared bumpers.
Despres said he misses the car shows over winter, and he likes “being able to see other people that are interested in cars. The weather is beautiful down here. It’s a beautiful spot.”
Brian Monahan from Plymouth drove his 1966 Chevrolet Corvette down to the park. He bought it from its previous owner a few years ago, and he fixed up the car himself “with quite a few winters, a little bit of money and some elbow grease.”
He said he comes to the cruise nights with a group of friends, usually after grabbing lunch together.
“Every week, we learn something new about our cars, whether it be the history of the car, or some repairs, maintenance,” Monahan said.
The final cruise night is scheduled for Sept. 18 from 5-9 p.m.
