Food education grows on Frogfoot Farm
WAREHAM — The Marion Institute led staff from the Westport Schools Food Service Department on a tour of Frogfoot Farm as they learned about the connections between agriculture, nutrition and their work in food service.
Nate Sander, the institute’s Grow Education program manager, led the Oct. 7 visit, along with harvesting and a fermentation workshop.
Sander explained the cycle of crop cultivation and how resting frields helps replenish soul nutrients for the next growing season. He also talked about how the farm provides habitat for wildlife, including a place for migrating birds to rest.
The group then helped harvest spinach, carrots and chard before joining a fermentation and sauerkraut-making workshop. They used ingredients they harvested on the farm to learn how preservation techniques can create new ways to prepare produce.
Frogfoot Farm uses land provided through a collaboration between the institute and the A. D. Makepeace Company, and is used to provide regenerative agriculture, community education and food relief. All of the food grown on the farm is donated, and the farm is staffed by volunteers and community partners.
